Valentine’s Day is a special occasion to express love and affection to your loved ones, but it can also significantly impact the environment. From the production of chocolates, flowers, and gifts to the packaging, shipping, and disposal of them, the holiday can contribute to waste and pollution. With a few changes, you can make your Valentine’s Day celebration more eco-friendly. Here are some tips to sustainably celebrate Valentine’s Day:
1. Gift Experiences Instead of Physical Items
Quality time together with your partner is memorable, personal, and often more sustainable than material gifts. Ideas for higher-priced experience gifts include concert tickets for an artist your partner loves or a booked trip for the two of you for either Valentine’s Day week or a future date. For a budget-friendly experience, cook your partner a homemade meal or plan a fun hike together. These moments create memories that will last a lifetime, and they don’t add to the clutter in your home or contribute to waste.
2. Buy Local and Seasonal Flowers or Plants
Flowers are a classic Valentine’s Day gift, but they often come from far away in refrigerated vehicles and are grown in large, industrial greenhouses using pesticides and other chemicals. According to the Society of American Florists, upwards of 250 million are produced annually for Valentine’s Day. Each cut flower can produce as high as 3 kg of CO2. To reduce the environmental impact of your flowers, look for locally grown, seasonal blooms that haven’t been shipped long distances. Even better, gift your partner an easy-to-care-for houseplant that will (hopefully) live a lot longer than flowers typically do.
3. Support Fair Trade and Vegan Chocolate
Chocolate production can have negative impacts on the environment such as deforestation, water pollution, and the use of child labor. When buying chocolates and other treats, look for products that are certified fair trade, and organic. Fair-trade labels indicate that the products were made with respect for workers and the environment. Also, look for dairy-free chocolates so that the products were made without animal cruelty. Some of my favorite fair-trade vegan chocolates are Trupo-Treats, Hu-Chocolate, and Dr.Bronner’s Magic Bars.
4. Choose Sustainable gifts
There is a high chance that your partner does not want pink heart-shaped jewelry or latex balloons that scream “Valentine’s Day”. Instead, gift them an item that can be used year-round. Try to purchase an item that has been on their wish list, so there is a higher chance the item will be appreciated and used. If you’re not sure what they want, but want to give a physical gift, look for items that are environmentally friendly and sustainably made. For example, you could gift your loved one a reusable water bottle, a natural soy candle, or a cruelty-free makeup kit.
By following these tips, your Valentine’s Day celebration will be more sustainable and help protect the environment. You will also be setting a positive example, inspiring your partner and others to do the same. I hope you have a Happy Valentine’s Day with your loved ones!
